Milan's 1st Dental Check Up...

Don took Milan to her first Dental check-up on Friday. She's had some strange brown stains on her teeth that we noticed about a month ago. They weren't going away despite our efforts to brush her teeth...which isn't easy as she doesn't really enjoy the whole tooth brushing thing, even with a cute pink ladybug tooth brush! So Don got a referral to a pediatric dentist in a nearby town and took her there for her appointment on Friday. From Don's report, the place is really geared toward kids. Lots of toys and a tv in the waiting area. In the exam room there is a tv on the ceiling and the kids can bring their own DVDs to watch while they are getting their teeth cleaned. They took Milan's picture and then the dentist examined her teeth. It turns out she had some bacteria in her mouth that was causing the staining. The dentist explained this is fairly common and she removed it and did her whole exam of Milan's teeth in about 5 minutes. Milan of course didn't like the cleaning, but overall, she did great! The best part of the whole visit was that the dentist gave each of the kids a free Firefly toothbrush - even though Milan was the only one there. These toothbrushes are great! They have a blinking light inside and you turn them on and then brush your teeth till the light goes out! This is a great concept for kids who like to brush for 10 seconds. It even worked for us because Mzee actually likes to brush his teeth for 3-5 minutes, so now we save time and he loves the blinking toothbrush. For Milan, I don't brush her teeth with it yet as her old toothbrush is still in good shape. I turn it on and let her hold it and brush her teeth while she is mesmerized by the blinking light. With her hands on the blinking toothbrush I have a few extra seconds to try to clean her teeth...there is no way she lets me brush for a minute, but at least I get a bit of cleaning done!

Mzee is scheduled for his first cleaning very soon, so stay tuned for how that goes!

Mzee LOVED pajama day at his school! He called Grandma this morning to tell her he made waffles at his school! He surprised us both today by spelling his name when he was starting a new Reader Rabbit game on the computer. He is doing great at letter recognition!
